The U18’s put in another superb performance as they were narrowly overcome by league leaders Slimbridge, in a goal fest which ended 6-4 to the visitors.

The U18’s welcomed high flyers Slimbridge to the TRICO Stadium, looking to build on their excellent performance last Friday, and to maintain the positive mood in the academy.

The previous encounter between the two sides ended 7-3, and early signs in the game suggested that another end to end classic was in store. The visitors however, were the ones to land the first blow, going 1-0 up in the 18th minute, and then adding a second to make it 2-0 immediately after in the 21st minute.

The Reds however, replied instantly, with Owusu scoring a powerful scissor kick in the 22nd minute, continuing his frightening form from last week! The Reds did not stop there, and continued their barrage of the Slimbridge defence in the 25th minute, when Owusu drove from deep in the Reds’ half, beating numerous men all the way through on goal to slot it past a helpless goalkeeper, 2-2! Owusu displaying yet again the talent he possesses and making it 6 goals in the previous 3 games, scoring a goal of the season contender in the process!

Slimbridge regained their lead in the 35th minute, and regained their two goal advantage shortly after, in the 39th minute to make it 4-2.

The Reds went into half time extremely pleased with their efforts, with the belief that the game was not over and that there was plenty of goals to be had in the second half.

The game did not slow down after the break either, with the level of intensity being carried into the second half. However, both defences stayed firm, and the flow of goals dried up for the first 30 minutes of the second half.

The visitors however, were the ones to break the second half deadlock in the 75th minute, making it 5-2. The Reds showed their incredible resilience yet again however, with Mo Konteh scoring from close range instantly after in the 76th minute. 5-3!

With the game seemingly petering out, the visitors added a 6th to their tally, making it 6-3 in stoppage time, from a superb long range strike. Almost unbelievably, the Reds replied instantly again with Liam Harding scoring from a superb strike moments after to make it 6-4!

Dreams of a historic comeback were crushed shortly after, with the final whistle blowing, bringing an end to a terrific game of football, with both sides giving everything and scoring some incredible goals in the process.

Despite the loss, the Reds’ will be thrilled with their performance, and the fact they went toe to toe with the league leaders and almost got something from a memorable game. The resilience shown to score instantly after not one, not two, but THREE GOALS, is something to be extremely proud of, as well as something to be extremely excited about. The performances and attitude of late in the academy have been Fantastic!

The U18’s host Bishop’s Cleeve in their next fixture, will the hope that they can carry the superb performances of late into the game, and get a positive result!
